Combatting Childhood Obesity in Louisiana

In the Pedagogical Kinesiology Lab, I work primarily on Project ProudMe. This project has a focus on nutrition and physical activity for middle schoolers from 6th to 8th grade. Louisiana is currently ranked third in childhood obesity, which puts children at a greater risk of musculoskeletal and cardiovascular diseases. Our nutrition intervention schools integrate healthy options via the Smarter Lunchroom Scorecard with two scores, one pre-intervention and one post-intervention. Our PE intervention schools use the ProudMe Manual to implement moderately intense activity sessions for kids to get their heart rate up. This research is beneficial to the future of Louisiana residents. Research has been an essential portion of my college career. Learning how to observe, interview, and explain results has allowed me to advance in my communication skills, which will be essential for PA school.
